there's no question whatsoever that the western, capitalistic value system has been encouraging individuals to take on massive debt to finance comfortable lifestyles for decades. we've built a house of cards and it's an art to maintain it from blowing away in the breeze. if it does blow away we'd better hope we have enough fortitude and core spirituality to replace our belief systems which, meantime, are almost entirely based upon how much 'stuff' we own.

the environment is degraded, the food chain poisoned, the seas overfished, economies are showing signs of severe stress, and we now have a preponderance to feel aggressive towards many others which we didn't feel but two years ago.

pretty clear warning signs, i'd say.

Source,

I wholeheartedly disagree.

Capitalism is good. It's only when the free market is interfered with and the finance sector is corrupted by fiat money and speculation that it becomes a cancer that grows out of control and destroys everything it touches. If the market is left alone it provides the goods and services people need, if government is allowed to interfere with the market it provides the goods and services government needs. This is the source of most problems of global scale. It is also why socialism and other central planning schemes never work long term.

Oceana,

I like a good steak. I doubt it will be just the US that lands on its backside,I think what we are beginning to see is competitive currency devaluations among all the big players. If every body tries to export deflation at once the currencies will burn off and the debt with it.

Source,

In order to get the debts burned off everyone has to export INFLATION,

not deflation when money gets very scarse and very valuable.

But the wealthy hate infaltion which makes them poorer in buying power,

so they buy gold or land.

Duma,
to clarify, you export deflation by allowing your currency to weaken(inflate)Thereby creating deflation in other currencies in terms of yours.

LJ

Thanks for the clearification,

Is the weakness of the US dollar now an attempt to export deflation to Europe?

Or it is not in their hands to weaken or strengthen the dollar?

It is the devaluation of the dollar that makes your gasoline prices go up.

In russia gasoline prices have gone down in terms of dollars since the dollar has gone down from 32 rubles to 28 rubles for a dollar.

And higher prices is the definition of inflation, since the same money is worth less and less.

So Americans getting paid same while prices are going up are on their way to the poorhouse.
