The American news media is getting it right insofar as the purported bin Laden audio tape is concerned.
For example, USA Today, the only mainstream nationally-circulated newspaper in the country, notes:
"The voice on the tape never endorses Saddam's dictatorship; it criticizes it.
"The speaker calls on Iraqis to fight the attackers, regardless of whether Saddam remains in power and despite the fact that Muslims consider socialists 'infidels." He was referring to Saddam's ruling Arab Baath Socialist Party.
"'The fighting should be in the name of God only, not in the name of national idelologies, nor to seek victory for the ignorant governments that rule Arab states, including Iraq,' the voice says."
The facts of the matter did not stop the Bush Administration from further attempts to link Iraq and al-Qaeda. A State Department public relations flack, commenting on the tape, simply ignored the evidence . . . as has President Bush and Secretary of State Powell.
