BAUCAU, East Timor (AP)

-- A Russian cargo plane with a crew of six crashed as it attempted to land in fog on the north coast of East Timor, a U.N. official said Friday.

The Russian-made IL-76 was carrying equipment for a Portuguese telephone company in East Timor, U.N. spokesman Wilton Fonseca said in the capital, Dili.

It crashed about three miles short of the airport in Baucau at about 3:30 p.m. local time (2:30 a.m. EST), Fonseca said.

There were no immediate reports of any survivors, he said.

"There was a lot of fog," Fonseca said. "There was bad weather."

Fonseca said the United Nations sent a rescue plane to the area 60 miles east of Dili, along with peacekeepers who were searching for survivors.

The IL-76 is a four-engine jet. Although originally intended as a military cargo aircraft, it is now widely used around the world as a civilian freighter.

Russian authorities establishing owner of crashed Il-76
Further info...

MOSCOW. Jan 31 (Interfax) - The UN Headquarters in New York has confirmed Friday's crash of an Il-76 cargo airplane over East Timor to Russia's aviation authorities.

An official with the Russian State Civil Aviation Service told Interfax that the UN did not provide the plane's registration number and could not name its owner.

Russia has already sent inquires to all of the country's air carriers operating flights for the UN. "There is now strong evidence that this was not a Russian carrier," the official said.

Russia believes that the airplane mostly likely belonged to a Ukrainian air carrier or Iran, which also uses Il-76 airplanes.

The Il-76, with six crewmembers onboard, crashed near Baucau's airport on the country's northern coast amidst dense fog. [RU EUROPE EEU EMRG ASIA TP DIS AER ID] tm aw <>

Extremely regrettable. Everybody familliar with flying
conditions in the area (and for that matter, sailing
conditions) should be aware of periods of extreme
losses of visibility.
