Kazan Kremlin Named Number One On Russia's 7 Wonders List

KAZAN/ST. PETERSBURG. July 8 (Interfax) - The results of the Russian nationwide project entitled "Seven wonders of Russia," which started from the Palace Square in St. Petersburg on August 17, 2007, were announced on Monday evening.

The project was organized by the Vsemirny Sledopyt magazine in association with the Russian Union of Travel Industry.

"A World Heritage Site, the Kazan Kremlin together with its Qolsharif Mosque and the orthodox Annunciation Cathedral has won the contest by a big margin after gaining 46,483 votes," Alexandra Pishchugina of the Vsemirny Sledopyt magazine told Interfax-Volga by phone from St. Petersburg on Monday.

The other six winners are: Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery (Pechora, 17,183 votes), Palace Square and Winter Palace (St. Petersburg, 17,106 votes), Kizhi Museum Reserve (Karelia, 13,723 votes), Tobolsk Kremlin (Tobolsk, 13,236 votes), Vyborg Castle (Leningrad region, 13,102 votes), Novgorod Kremlin and St. Sophia Cathedral (Veliky Novgorod, 12,944 votes).

The city winners, which will form a new Golden Russian itinerary, will soon be awarded with diplomas, Pishchugina said.

The key goal of the project is to revive interest for Russian sightseeing attractions and to boost domestic tourism.

Based on the project results, travel agencies will prepare detailed itineraries, which will take three to six months. "This will require some legal formalities," the official said.

The Kazan Kremlin was built by Russian architects after Ivan the Terrible seized Kazan in 1552. In November 2000, it was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Annunciation Cathedral is the oldest of all historical and architectural monuments of the 16th century that remained in Kazan, and prior to 1917 belonged to the Kazan Diocese. After many years of restoration work the Kazan Kremlin was solemnly consecrated and opened in summer 2005.

The Kazan Kremlin is also the residence of the Tatarstan president.

I think the Kazan Kremlin is very special place.
There are Russian Orthodox Church and a Muslim Mosque on its territory. The complex looks spectacular.

According to experts, the Kazan Kremlin, the only surviving fortress of the Kazan Khanate (1438-1552), highlights cultural diversity, seamlessly combining Islamic and Russian Orthodox architecture.

On November 30, 2000, the Kazan Kremlin was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming the 15th Russian World Heritage Site and the second fortress after the Moscow Kremlin to be included in the World Heritage List.

Kazan (Russian: Каза́нь; Tatar: Казан, Qazan) is the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, and one of Russia's largest cities. It is a major industrial, commercial and cultural center, and remains the most important center of Tatar culture. Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in central European Russia.
