Could the world's oldest Koran actually be older than the Prophet Muhammad?

A team of researchers at the University of Oxford assessed fragments of the Koran kept at the Birmingham library with the help of carbon dating. They discovered that the text was produced between 658 and 645 A.D. Yet Islamic scholars believe that Muhammad lived between 570 and 632 AD; this would mean that the text was compiled either before the Prophet's birth or during his childhood

This gives more ground to what have been peripheral views of the Koran's genesis, like that Muhammad and his early followers used a text that was already in existence and shaped it to fit their own political and theological agenda, rather than Muhammad receiving a revelation from heaven."

However, Small also cautioned that the carbon dating only used parchment rather than the ink from the book. "If the dates apply to the parchment and the ink, and the dates across the entire range apply, then the Koran -- or at least portions of it -- predates Mohammed, and moves back the years that an Arabic literary culture is in place well into the 500s."

"This would radically alter the edifice of Islamic tradition and the history of the rise of Islam in late Near Eastern antiquity would have to be completely revised, somehow accounting for another book of scripture coming into existence 50 to 100 years before, and then also explaining how this was co-opted into what became the entity of Islam by around AD700."

but then the real article:

The tests carried out on the parchment of the Birmingham folios yield the strong probability that the animal from which it was taken was alive during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad or shortly afterwards. This means that the parts of the Quran that are written on this parchment can, with a degree of confidence, be dated to less than two decades after Muhammads death. These portions must have been in a form that is very close to the form of the Quran read today, supporting the view that the text has undergone little or no alteration and that it can be dated to a point very close to the time it was believed to be revealed..

There are articles all over the internet suggesting that the dates do not fit.

WTF.......

Very strange world when a publication representing science, is actually that screwed up to even allow such a publication.

If it predates the "Prophet" then that suggests that he is a plagiarist. Who did God actually speak to if it was long before Mohammed?

Did the Angel actually speak to Mohammed or did he make it all up and dictated earlier revelations to another and claim that they were given to him? If so, this totally trashes a pillar of Islam. Mohammed is not "The Prophet".

What if God didn't need humans to punish, chop off the heads or fight in order for people to believe and behave correctly? Wouldn't it be something if God needed no help in making people believe "correctly"?

What if there were no "correct" way and it was up to the individual to find his or her own personal relationship with the divine and goofy rules about covering heads and not eating bacon cheeseburgers was all man made?

Really? Explain.

I will say that the Bible New Testament books were not written by the authors they are ascribed to other than the book of Paul. The four Gospels were written hundreds of years after the deaths of the "authors".....but not before they were born.

Mobile phones must be taking a toll on the collective hive-mind braincells.

According to those dates, that Koran dates decades after his death.

You said it not me! Actually the only book tale unchanged is Ramayana Mahabharta, and even its origins are questioned by many

If you read the article. The document is after Muhammad and that is what is funny about the conveyance. The carbon dating was spot on but the reading comprehension of the writer of the article, was a bit 'SLOW'
