Forcing RT to register as 'foreign agent' is a ‘horrendous blow to press freedom’

Washington's ultimatum that forced RT to register as a 'foreign agent' under a 1938 law created to counter Nazi Germany has drawn condemnation, with the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) terming it a “troubling precedent.”

"Compelling RT to register under FARA is a bad idea. This is a shift in how the law has been applied in recent decades, so we have little information about how its reporting requirements might affect individual journalists," said CPJ North America Program Coordinator, Alexandra Ellerbeck.

The CPJ is “uncomfortable with governments deciding what constitutes journalism or propaganda,” Ellerbeck added. The New York-based international NGO, promoting press freedom and protecting the rights of journalists, also said the US authorities “ordering foreign outlets to register could set a troubling precedent.”

The CPJ further warned that the current regulations existing under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) could make the work of a news media outlet – particularly one that actively uses social media – de facto impossible. Entities registered under FARA are supposed to file a copy of everything they publish with the US Justice Department within 48 hours of transmission, the CPJ said, pointing out that this requirement could be technically applied to individual social media posts, text messages, and broadcasts.

The rights group then cited a report by the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General that said such a rule could create “a constant and unrealistic burden on registrants to submit materials, and on FARA personnel to police their submissions.”

Chris Hedges, a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, New York Times bestselling author and former professor at Princeton University, said Washington forcing RT to register under FARA is ”crude censorship” and “one of the most horrendous blows to press freedom since the anti-communist witch hunts of the 1950s.”

The move, Hedges goes on, has “nothing to do with the dissemination of Russian propaganda” but is instead driven by a desire to silence the “critics of American capitalism and imperialism” given a platform by RT America. He also warned that the measures taken against RT are “the beginning, not the end, of a broad campaign against press freedom.”

“Once this precedent of state censorship is normalized, far more tepid and compliant media outlets will be targeted,” Hedges said.

Russia’s Ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, paid a courtesy call to RT’s Washington DC offices Monday to voice his support.

“I highly appreciate your efforts in the US as well as in the world. It's very important that you explain to everybody the reality in the world,“ the ambassador said.

He described the demand for it to register as a 'foreign agent' as an “unfriendly step.”

“Is it good or bad? I think, it’s bad,” Antonov told the media.

The demand for RT to register under FARA is a “politicized witch hunt” and a “precedent for silencing foreign media and even dissident media,” Max Blumenthal, US author and journalist, argued, adding that he believes that the crusade against independent media platforms will gain momentum.

Blumenthal noted that the US government did not present any proof, as required by FARA, that RT has been taking instructions from the Kremlin, arguing that the real reason behind its listing is that RT is “providing platform to voices like myself that are critical of US foreign policy, that are critical of NATO expansion, that are critical of Israeli apartheid…”

“It’s a clear attack on press freedom and we’ve heard from CNN, the outlet that freaked out when Trump criticized fake news, absolutely nothing,” he noted.

The campaign against RT is an “absolute revelation of the US hypocrisy on the world stage as they lecture the world about the values of liberal democracy when they clamp down on their own critics at home,” he said.

Forcing RT to register as a foreign agent is “a product of the Democratic hysteria over Russian involvement in the US elections which they alleged constantly but never offer any proof of, ” Michael Patrick Flanagan, former Illinois congressman ® told RT. He found the request “unusual and irksome” and that tit-for-tat measures from Russia “would seem only fair.”

Flanagan said that RT is within its right to bring legal action against the US government, adding that the court will have to find “constitutional balance” between protecting Americans from propaganda and protecting free speech even “if one’s free speech might be something that in certain portions it doesn’t like.”

“Free speech is free speech for a reason,” he stressed.

Gina Loudon, anchor and columnist, believes application of the 1938 FARA is missing the mark in RT's case. It was designed to thwart the “solid ideological differences” between the US and Nazi Germany, and in the present day differences on such a level only exist with the likes of ISIS and North Korea, in which cases Russia is actually on America's side, Loudon told RT.

Earlier Monday, RT Editor-in-Chief, Margarita Simonyan, announced the broadcaster had filed for registration as a ‘foreign agent’ in the US while being threatened with legal action should it not comply. Simonyan said RT would go to court to prove that Washington’s demands violate US law. “This demand is discriminative, it runs counter to the principles of democracy and the freedom of speech,” she said on November 9.

In September, the Justice Department demanded that a company supplying services to RT America on US soil must register under FARA. Washington threatened to freeze the company’s assets if it failed to comply.

The FARA legislation was adopted in 1938 to counter Nazi Germany. Some 400 entities and individuals are currently registered as “foreign agents” under the law. However, only a handful of foreign media outlets operating in the US have been put on the list.

We should move the U.S. capital to Tel Aviv -- eliminate the middleman. We could merge the Knesset on the Potomac into the real Knesset. Think of how much money we would save!

RT is a foreign agent in that it cant be relied on to report only what's in Israel's interest as is the case with American media which is controlled by Jews through ownership and advertsing; all sanctioned by a Congress whose members depend on the Israeli lobby and American Jews for the campaign organization, funding and media to win elecction to office. Those working in American media are very careful to avoid reporting anything which might undermine Israel's security. If RT were to slip up and report what's really happening, who knows what would happen.

RT Forced to Register as Foreign Agent – Russia Vows Revenge Against American Media

November 10, 2017

The US government is continuing to put pressure on RT, just because hey, whatever, they gotta get something out of this Russian hoax, right?

Why not put Russian media through hell?

After all, that’s something.

Harass their journalists, maybe get a few to quit. Cost them a bunch of money. Make operating impossible.

At least Putin is going to take revenge on American media in Russia.

What he needs to do is shutdown Hollywood entertainment media so Russian women can’t watch these kiken movies and kiken Sex in the City. That’s the real threat to their civilization.

Russia Announces Retaliation for US Government Crackdown on RT Journalists

November 15, 2017

The Department of Justice recently ordered a crackdown on RT. The news network is being forced – under threat of imprisonment and confiscation of their assets – to  register as “foreign agents” AKA spies.

Russia Today has no consistent ideological line, it just shows Americans what is actually going on in America (unlike the MSM) from a variety of political slants. It has had all types of figures with diverse points of view on its station, ranging from Richard Spencer to Julian Assange, libertarian Ron Paul and principled (he makes meaningful criticisms of Zionism) Jewish Leftist Max Blumental.

The thing people like about is that they actually talk about issues average folks care about. I have relatives who are regular boomer conservatives and one who is a Democrat that love RT.

The MSM in America can’t compete because they lie, either directly or by omission.

Russia is now announcing that it will respond in kind.

_

Washington Post:

Russian lawmakers on Tuesday proposed sweeping legislation that could designate nearly all foreign media in the country as “foreign agents,” a move to retaliate for a similar U.S. requirement aimed at Russia’s state-funded RT television station.

The legislation, in the form of legal amendments that lawmakers are expected to approve Wednesday, represents a significant expansion in a tit-for-tat targeting of foreign media following allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Under the new measures, the Russian Ministry of Justice could require any media organizations in the country that receive foreign funding, whether from governments or private individuals, to join a registry, issue special disclaimers on articles and submit financial reports under penalty of fines or a possible ban on operations.

The move comes in response to a U.S. Justice Department requirement that RT, formerly named Russia Today, register as a foreign agent due to its alleged role in interfering in U.S. affairs by pushing the Kremlin’s agenda.

Russian lawmakers and other public officials, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, claimed Tuesday that they were forced to respond with stricter regulations of foreign media in Russia.

“It’s not we who started this, but we can’t just swallow this gross violation of democratic norms, international law and freedom of speech, and we have to give a mirrored response,” said Valentina Matviyenko, head of Russia’s upper house of parliament, in remarks carried by the Interfax news service.

    …

Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking Saturday in Danang, Vietnam, promised a “tit-for-tat response” against U.S. media. The version of the bill he saw then “may seem too harsh, but it’s natural,” he said.

The Russian law may affect considerably more outlets than the U.S. FARA legislation, which requires registration by specific foreign nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and other agencies receiving government funding.

Russia’s amendments to its own NGO “foreign agent” laws would allow the Justice Ministry to include any media outlet receiving funding from abroad, regardless of whether that source is private or public.

    …

It is not yet clear which outlets the law will affect. Russian lawmakers have publicly named the U.S. state-funded Voice of America and Radio Free Europe, the German state-funded Deutsche Welle and the privately owned television network CNN as possible targets. State-media journalists have mentioned other news organizations, including The Washington Post and the New York Times, in connection with the law.

_

Until now, the US government has been reluctant to take such extreme measures against RT.

They feared that Russia would retaliate by forcing all the American, German and British media trying to promote gay pedophilia, rap music, feminism and Soros color revolution in Russia to register as foreign agents as well. Now they’re doing it.

After 30 years of Sex in The City and Coca Cola, most Russians realize that America was a Potemkin village all along: a Jew-run Disneyland that is all neon lights and no substance. They lived through the Jewish oligarch anarchy of Boris Yeltsin and now see our dying evil empire. The old tricks (Hollywood, consumerism, porn, globalism, cosmopolitanism, etc) that worked in the 80s are obsolete.

The reason America is now on the propaganda defensive is simple: life for the average (especially white) American sucks. It’s a society where people are alienated, struggling to pay the bills, immersed in crassness and paranoid about one another. Most of the world also doesn’t want America’s tranny and Pornhub traveling poz circus either (our ZOG’s lovely cultural exports).

We have no say in our government, we have dwindling economic prospects, our society is pure depravity, and we have Jews ethnically cleansing us to boot!

During the Cold War, the “American” (((elite))) was more careful about how they treated the working and middle classes because they feared any fissure could be exploited by the USSR. When the Soviet Union fell and the world power dynamic became unipolar, they started the process of creating the tyrannical, poor and brown neo-liberal hell they wanted from the beginning.

We’re being immolated by it. So are the countries we occupy (Germany, even Japan to an extent). Why would anyone want to be part of that?

They really thought they had reached the end of history, and never expected the regeneration of Russian power. The RT shut down is a sign that our state and ruling institutions are genuinely afraid of the people they oppress.
